SDG 5 Global Issues

1. Women in India face challenges in economic independence, with lower labor force participation rates and earnings compared to men. Gender disparities in employment opportunities and wages contribute to economic inequalities between genders.

2. Women are underrepresented in leadership positions, with women holding only 23.7% of national parliament seats globally.

3. Access to sexual and reproductive health and rights is another key issue, with only 52% of women married or in a union freely making decisions about their own healthcare, contraceptive use, and sexual relations. Harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation also persist.

What Actions can you take?

1. Stand up against harassment. Whenever you see or become aware of harassment, whether at school, streets, home or the online space, raise your voice against it.

2. Share the workload at home. Sharing domestic responsibilities ensures the work burden doesn’t fall only on one person and instills the value of gender equality and essential life skills.

3. Demonstrate respect, treat everyone with respect, regardless of gender, and set an example for friends.
